Selphyl™, a completely natural autologous tissue regeneration technology which was developed by Aesthetic Factors, was recently performed by Dr Julio F. Gallo, Medical Director of The MIAMI Institute for Age Management and Intervention, on CBS.
During filming, Dr Gallo refers to Selphyl™ as a breakthrough new system to produce an injectable PRFM (Platelets Rich Fibrin Matrix) for the treatment of wrinkles and facial contouring.
A small volume of blood is drawn from the patient and, through a patented process, separates and concentrates the patients own platelets and fibrin into a matrix. The resulting Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix is injected into a treatment area to stimulate cell proliferation which promotes the increase of volume and rejuvenation of the skin through a process of guided tissue re-generation.
Dr Gallo explained that pronounced effects occur as early as three weeks after the procedure. The effect of Selphyl™, now FDA approved, has been shown to last beyond a year and a half in clinical studies. It is thought that Selphyl™ treats the root cause of facial aging by triggering the production of new cells and collagen, a key structural element of the skin.
In this short segment, Dr Gallo showed that the entire procedure lasts less than twenty minutes in the physician’s office. Selphyl™ is highly cost effective since one draw of blood will produce four 1cc syringes of PRFM, allowing full facial rejuvenation to be performed at one visit.
Dr Gallo concludes that Selphyl™ offers a simple, reproducible, hypoallergenic, and cost effective method of growing a patient’s own tissue to fill skin depressions, wrinkles and folds, rather than using synthetic, plastic or animal derived materials.

Dear Dr Fine,
The week before my period I crave sweets, bread, pretzels and chips in a big way. Is this normal?
Teresa
North Miami Beach
Dear Teresa,
This is a very normal reaction. Here’s why:
Fluctuating hormones have a huge affect on your brain’s chemistry, which has a strong connection to food. This is what is causing your intense cravings. Research indicates that a combination of fat and sugar enhances the production of endorphins and serotonin. This can lead to feelings of joy, calm and satisfaction.
Dear Dr Fine,My wife and I have a new baby and I need to loose 30 pounds. I am in the process of reading a variety of diet books to see which one I like the best. In every book they tell you to find out if you’re an “Emotional Eater.” What does this mean and how do I find out if I am an Emotional Eater?Simon
Bay Point
Dear Simon,
Eating is strongly connected to feelings such as happiness, sadness, loneliness, boredom, anger, restlessness etc. In addition, overeating can be directly related to stress, anxiety and depressed moods. Health professionals and experts are starting to realize that he large majority of overeating stems from our emotions. Being able to predict what we eat, why we eat it and what effect it has on our feelings gives us the ability to identify our needs as well as understand our feelings and cravings. The reason the subject comes up in every diet book is because our ability to learn how to address emotions and stress without reaching for food is key to weight loss and a successful weight management program. Good luck with your new family!

Health professionals and experts are starting to realize that 75% of overeating stems from our emotions. Our relationship with food is complex. Eating is strongly connected to feelings such as happiness, sadness, loneliness, boredom, anger, restlessness, stress, anxiety and depression. Food has a way of soothing us, filling our time and blocking undesired emotions. In addition, sight, smell, taste and texture can stimulate physical sensations of hunger as well as illicit anticipation which, in turn, sets in motion a cascade of hormonal and biochemical reactions. Psychology becomes biology and visa versa.
There is an important difference between hunger and appetite. Hunger is biological; it is the body’s request for healthy food. Appetite on the other hand is psychological; it is the mind’s desire to eat for pleasure. Diets will attempt to change what you eat. Exercising will increase your body’s strength and shape. Only changing the way you think will enable you to transform your behavior.
It is our attitudes toward food that drives our poor decisions and creates the habits that lead to mindless eating and weight gain. Thoughts and beliefs are the genesis of our attitudes and behaviors. In order for us to consistently make good choices without feeling deprived and cheated we must address, challenge and restructure these thoughts and false beliefs. To maintain our weight we must learn, develop and incorporate specific strategies that will identify and prevent emotional triggers from propelling us into stress and quilt based eating.
Before one starts a weight loss program it is important for a professional to assess your personal beliefs regarding fitness and weight as well as uncover your relationship with food. The foundation of a successful weight loss program must originate with these core beliefs. Only a customized program has the ability to investigate and to identify those specific behaviors and patterns that have not only led to your weight gain but have also interfered with and prevented you from achieving and maintaining your weight loss goals.
Our brain ultimately controls why we eat, the way we eat and what we eat. Old patterns and habits often hijack our best intentions. In order to create new patterns we must be able to predict what we eat, why we eat it and what effect it has on our feelings. This information will give us the ability to accurately identify our needs as well as understand our feelings and cravings.
A successful personal weight loss program at The MIAMI Institute for Age Management and Intervention will include professionally guided support, inspiration, motivation and education. The development of realistic achievable goals and the strategies for maintenance will be customized to your specific lifestyle.
Learning how to address your emotions and stress without reaching for food combined with a genuine desire for better health and fitness is the key to a successful weight management program.

Researchers are finding possible links between periodontal (gum) infections and other diseases. Current studies suggest that there may be a link between gum disease and cardiovascular disease, even going so far as to suggest that gum disease may be a more serious risk factor for heart disease than high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, gender and age. Your oral health affects your overall health, but studies that will find exactly why these problems are linked are still underway.
Research shows that your risk of developing cardiovascular disease varies according to the severity of gum infection. Bacteria is present in infected gums and can loosen and spread throughout the body to your arteries. The worse the infection, the more likely the bacteria are to become blood-borne. Infected gums bleed, making it easier for bacteria to enter your bloodstream. If bacteria become dislodged, the bacteria can enter through cuts or sores in your mouth and can travel to other parts of the body. It has been suggested that bacteria can be dislodged and enter the bloodstream during tasks as simple as brushing, flossing or even chewing.
If bacteria reach the arteries, they can irritate them in the same way that they irritate gum tissue. This could cause arterial plaque to accumulate, which can cause hardening of the arteries and decreased or blocked blood flow. Compromised blood flow to your heart can cause a heart attack. Also, arterial plaque can come loose and travel to other parts of the body. If a blockage occurs in the brain, it can cause a stroke.
Oral hygiene is now more important than ever! Gum disease is a serious gum infection that should always be taken seriously. Although gum disease can often show few or no symptoms at all, watch for gums that are red and irritated or bleed easily. There are many new treatments available to control and help reverse gum disease. Schedule an oral cleaning today!
